BASFY Launches Lower-Carbon Paper Coating Dispersions

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • BASFY launched paper coating dispersions with product carbon footprints reduced by about 20-45%.
  • Low-PCF raw materials, renewable electricity and low-PCF steam help reduce the dispersions' footprints.
  • A mass-balance approach keeps manufacturing unchanged, enabling customers to switch without requalification.

BASF SE (BASFY - Free Report) has launched a new portfolio of paper coating dispersions with reduced Product Carbon Footprints (rPCF), offering customers a practical and cost-effective way to reduce emissions. The new products manufactured at BASF’s Ludwigshafen Verbund site will have roughly 20-45% lower Product Carbon Footprints compared with corresponding conventional products.

The rPCF dispersions are designed to help paper and board manufacturers lower emissions in the “Purchased Goods and Services” category to advance the Scope 3.1carbon-reduction targets. In this new launch, BASFY uses several measures to lower the products’ carbon footprints, including low-PCF raw materials and green utilities such as renewable electricity and low-PCF steam.

The products are manufactured at the site using a mass-balance approach, in which a defined share of conventional raw materials or utilities is replaced with lower-PCF alternatives. This enables BASF to allocate it to the rPCF products while keeping the underlying manufacturing process unchanged. The dispersions now serve as a drop-in solution, allowing customers to transition without requalification.

The company calculates product carbon footprints according to guidance from the Together for Sustainability initiative, with TÜV Rheinland certifying the conformance of BASF’s calculation methodology with the standard.

BASFY shares have gained 20.1% in the past year compared with the industry’s 0.2% growth in the same period.
